Politics

The United Nations has been in the news recently over its calls for Spain to investigate crimes committed during the Spanish Civil War and for the Vatican to “immediately remove” priests who are known or suspected child abusers. Do you think it is right for an international organization to call for these investigations and actions? Do you think the UN has the authority to make these demands?

Society

Hollywood actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman died recently from a drug overdose drawing attention to the issue of drug addiction amongst even the most successful of people. Fellow actor Russell Brand wrote an article for The Guardian following Hoffman's death condemning drug laws saying that “If drugs are illegal, people who use drugs are criminals”. Do you agree with this statement? Do you think drug laws should be changed?

Culture

The 28th Edition of the Goya awards took place amongst some controversy over the absence of the culture minister José Ignacio Wert. Some speculate that he has purposely avoided the event after he was booed in the Forqué awards and that this is very representative of the divide between Spanish cinema and the government. Do you think the crisis has affected Spanish cinema as much as some claim?

Environment

The English government is going to start charging 5p for single-use plastic bags in an attempt to help protect the environment. The Republic of Ireland and Wales have similar schemes in place and they have seen nearly a 90% drop in plastic bag usage. Do you think this is a good idea?
